Kara Kirtley

By Eric Hultz

If you were to step back in time to a tiny town in Western Kentucky during the 1990’s, you could find a young Kara Kirtley either saddling up her horse to hit the trail, helping her dad campaign around town, or cheering on her two favorite basketball teams- the Muhlenberg North Stars and the Kentucky Wildcats.

Kara grew up the child of an elementary school teacher and a County Judge Executive and says politics run in her blood. She’s also a sucker for a good story, so much so that she has her degree in Theatre from the University of Kentucky.

After college, Kara worked in Washington, D.C. for the United States Congress as a scheduler for Senator Jim Bunning. But before long, she realized she missed having a creative outlet, and decided that broadcast journalism was a great way to combine her two passions.

Before coming to ABC 5, Kara worked at an ABC affiliate in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she did a little bit of everything, from producing the morning show and serving as the Hometown Hero and a general assignment reporter as well as a fill-in anchor.

Kara is proud to now call Montana home, and believes there’s nowhere else like it. She says she’s touched daily by the genuine openhearted character and good old down to earth nature of Montanans, and feels blessed to have the opportunity to live and work here.

You can catch Kara anchoring on ABC 5 at 5, 6, and 10 during the week or out in the community reporting. She loves to hear from viewers, so feel free to drop her an email with story ideas or just to say hello.
