By T. Ciprari

Charlie Heit's, Montana Broadcaster's 2008 Weather Broadcaster of the Year, life began in 1950 on a farm near Arkansaw, Wisconsin. "Never in my wildest dreams would I be forecasting the weather on television in Montana. This is the zenith of my broadcast career."

After High School there was a brief attempt a college. "I was hi-lighting with a black magic marker.. I didn't know they came in colors. It made it tough at exam time to retain the important information." Well, a stint in the Army followed, including an all expense paid trip to Vietnam as a combat medic. "It truly is fun, travel and adventure in the U.S. Army!" With the G.I. Bill in hand, it was off to Brown Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"The world of radio was my oyster." Charlie began broadcasting at WRDN in Durand, Wisconsin in 1972, then to KHDN and KRWS-FM in Hardin, Montana in 1973. From 1976 to 1981 he was at the "Polka Station of the Nation" KNUJ in New Ulm, Minnesota. "I was a gypsy of the air-waves."

Charlie returned to Montana in 1981 and tours of duty at KEIN, KLFM, and KMON radio in Great Falls, Montana. He moved to the land of video in 1992 at KFBB-TV. "I started as the overnight switcher, and began to move up the food chain, moving in front of the camera in 1998." When veteran weatherman Mark May hung up his "Red Sweater" in June of 2000, Charlie took over the 5:30 and 10:00 newscasts. "It's weather with an attitude, I have fun with it, and I know the viewer gets the needed information and a chuckle or two." Can you believe it... "I have a face for radio and a voice for the newspaper.. this is a great country" Charlie is a current member of the Montana Air National Guard, after serving 8 years with the Army National Guard in Helena. Charlie was honored with an E.B. Craney award from the Montana Broadcasters Association as the 2008 Weathercaster of the year. "I love Montana, I've been all over the world, but it is fantastic to call the "Big Sky Country" home.
