By Ashlie Rodriguez

The Pondera County Conservation, along with Districts from Toole, Liberty, and Glacier counties, will be hosting the 2012 Winter Grazing Seminar.

The Seminar will be Feb 16-17 at Norley Hall in Conrad. The following speakers have been confirmed:
Fred Provenza, Utah State University professor emeritus, with a presentation on grazing animal behavior: Mr. Provenza spent his career researching grazing animal behavior; how and why they choose what and where to eat. His research is very interesting and can be applied to grazing management to assist cattle ranchers in improving their system.

Patsy Houghton, founder of Heartland Cattle Company, McCook, Nebraska: Patsy will talk about her original professional heifer development program and research center. This heifer development program is designed to improve many aspects of the cattle herd including; increased conception rates, more uniform calf crop, and improved record keeping and profitability.

Marni Thompson, NRCS Resource Conservationist in the Great Falls Area Office: Marni has used animal behavior research to carry out many projects in Montana, specifically a particular method of manipulating cattle behavior developed by Kathy Voth. Marni will offer a presentation on success stories of cattle grazing weeds, specifically a ranch in Pondera County.

Marsha Goetting, Montana State University Agriculture Economics professor in Bozeman: Dr. Goetting will give an interactive presentation on agriculture estate planning. Seminar participants will have an opportunity to ask specific questions in relation to estate planning and current laws pertaining to estates and multi-generation farm/ranch planning.

There will be a banquet on the evening of February 16. The Ringling 5 will be the featured entertainment.
