- Outreach Activities:
Max Media of Montana participated in 4 Outreach Activities during the period December 1, 2003 to November 30, 2004. These are detailed on the following pages.
Max Media of Montana LLC
Outreach Activity Description Form
#1 Year: 2005 Name of Activity: Kids Do the News
Description of Initiative:
This was an essay contest targeted to middle school and high school students. It was designed to encourage good writing skills and interest in broadcast careers. It involved a day long television working experience for the winners.
Dates: February 28, 2005 for 6 weeks.
Winners were chosen during week of April 11, 2005 and scheduled for appearances on the Montana News Network 10pm News during the entire month of May.
Contest aired on the Max Media stations in 6 Montana markets: Missoula, Kalispell, Butte, Bozeman, Helena, & Great Falls.
The various school systems were contacted and individual classes were encouraged to enter as a class project. The students were asked to write a 300-word maximum essay for any aspect of a newscast. (News, Weather, Sports, or Health Report, etc.)
3 winners from each of the 6 markets were chosen for a total of 18 winners.
Each Monday Friday night beginning May 1 May 25 one winner was featured on our live 10pm Newscast. The winner worked with an anchor/reporter on a special Kidz segment for that days newscast which they helped write and did the on-air reporting for.
#2 Year: 2005 Name of Activity: Employment Law Seminar 2005
Description of Initiative:
On Friday October 28, 2005, Max Media of Montana LLC attended the Employment Law Seminar sponsored by Garlington, Lohn & Robinson law firm and the Montana Broadcasters Association. The seminar hours were from 8:00 am 4:00 pm held at the Holiday Inn Parkside 2000 South Pattee Street in Missoula Montana. The seminar is geared to educate local businesses on legal-employment related issues that arise on all professions. There were eight topics covered as follows:
- Independent Contractor Laws David Berkoff
- The Evolution of and Employee Candace Fetscher
- Illegal Discrimination & Harassment Maureen Lennon
- Recent Trend in ERSA Litigation Charles Handsberry
- Legislative & Case Law Updates Lucy France
- Laws on Employee Leave of Absence Anita Harper
- Wage & Hour Laws Robert Lukes
- Disability Discrimination Lucy Fance
Max Media of Montana sent two representatives: Clay Meissner, Business/Human Resources Manager and Debbie Morlock/Accountant to attend the Seminar.
Of particular interest to Max Media was the presentation on illegal and disability discrimination. These two presentations covered several topics on equal employment opportunity such as: nondiscrimination hiring practices, sexual harassment, disability discrimination, marital discrimination and how to deal with discrimination complaints by employees.
In Summary, the Employment Law Seminar was a very informative exercise that will benefit Max Media of Montana in its future employment issues. We will attend this seminar on a yearly basis and it is our intention to give every manager within the company the opportunity to participate in this seminar.
#3 Year: 2005 Name of Activity: Montana Broadcasters Association
Scholarship & Broadcast Careers PSAs
Description of Initiative:
The Montana Broadcasters Association gives TV and radio stations the opportunity to contribute to its scholarship program. Each of the Max Media stations contributed to this effort monetarily.
Additionally, the association provided a PSA highlighting broadcast careers to recruit diverse people to consider a broadcast career. The stations ran this PSA on-air throughout its broadcast day during the school year.
#4 Year: 2005 Name of Activity: Student Internships
Description of Initiative:
Max Media administers a college internship program designed to enhance the academic experience with hands-on experience in broadcasting. Each semester the station contacts the Radio & TV program at the University of Montana to find interns for promotion and production. The internships are non-compensated in exchange for course credit and normally are 15 hours per week for 10 weeks.
