Even with a slight uptick in home birthing in the U.S., less than 1% of babies are born at home, down drastically from a rate of 44% in the 1940s.
But Montana is one of the top states in home birthing, with more than 2% of babies born at home.
In the United States, most babies continue to born in a hospital setting. But after 15 years of decline, more women are choosing give birth in their homes with midwifes like Mary Anne Brown.
Brown has been a practicing midwife in North Central Montana for over 25 years, delivering over 400 babies between Helena and Havre.
Home birthing is once again on the rise, a trend Brown believes could be related to an increase of c-sections and cost. A healthy home delivery totals around $3000.
Montana midwifes must complete a three-part apprenticeship before receiving a state license, and care for healthy expectant mothers through pre-natal to post-delivery checkups.
And while some women choose home birth because of personal views, Brown has seen many soon-to-be mothers take baby steps toward home delivery.
