Rehberg Tells White House to Extend Home Buyer Tax Credit

Story Updated: Sep 14, 2011

Earlier this week, we told you how area realtors were hoping the first time home buyer tax credit would be extended. And now, Congressmen Denny Rehberg is jumping into the fray.

On Wednesday Rehberg sent a letter to White House officials urging them to prolong the $8,000 rebate.

Rehberg is also co-sponsoring the Home BuyerTax Credit Act of 2009. The act would extend the rebate for a year, increase the credit to $15,000 or 10 percent of the purchase price of a principal residence and make it available to all home buyers.

Rehberg says, "As we come to the sunset time, which is the end of november, it seems like it makes logical sense to extend it and expand it to allow other people the same opportunities to get into home ownership."

Rehberg says it will be difficult to extend the program before the November 30, 2009 deadline, but he says many lawmakers are in favor of the extension.

The senator announced an additional $6,500 "move up" tax credit for people that have lived in the same house for 5 out of the last 8 years. The final details are emerging, but it appears the Senate is done fighting on the tax credit. The vote will likely happen Monday, 11/2
