Fort Benton Honors America's War Dogs

By KFBB News Team

The Fort Benton community honored a different kind of war hero on Veteran's Day. A hero that doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. America’s War dogs have served faithfully over the year, but have remained quiet heroes. Current and former military personnel gathered in Fort Benton to recognize the thousands of war dogs who have served our country in combat. Col. John Probst says "These war veterans were courageous, they held no alternative motives, they simply always wanted to do their job." Trained to search for bombs and explosives, they saved 10,000 lives in Vietnam alone. But unlike other soldiers, they’ve never received any kind of recognition for their heroic efforts. "They were noble fighters and warriors. They had no thoughts regarding medals, rotation dates, promotions or pay raises, their service was and remains today honorable and pure." says Col. Probst. And for many military personnel, these dogs have become more than man’s best friend. Back in November of 2000, President Bill Clinton signed a law allowing the dogs to go up for adoption so these veterans can enjoy the retired life, after serving our country.
