Food Prices Rise, Same Number of Mouths to Feed at Cascade County Detention Center

By KFBB News Team

As global food prices soar, correction facilities across the country will have to pay more to feed inmates, but here in Cascade County Sheriff David Castle says there short on funds. The Cascade County Detention Center currently has about 370 county and state inmates. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner that works out to nearly 12 hundred meals a day. Right now they pay one dollar and 48 cents a meal, but that's going up. Warden Dan O’Fallon told us, “we used to be able to buy a box of cereal for $2 and change, now it’s $4.” Monday’s lunch menu included a cheeseburger, potatoes, bread made from scratch, macaroni salad and a cookie. Since the facility holds state inmates- they must meet state requirements. The state requires prisoners to be served a whopping three thousand calories a day. That also drives costs up. One way that the jail saves money is in the food's preparation. There are eight inmates that work in the kitchen. The morning shift starts at 4 AM. They're paid $2.50 a day for eight to ten hours of work.

GF may double parking meter fees from 25 to 50 cents an hour. What do you think?

  • They need the money & I can afford it.
  • Another reason for me not to shop downtown.
  • A smaller increase will keep me shopping downtown.
  • Toss the meters, parking should be free.
