Democrats Spar with Rehberg's Office Over Automated Phone Calls

By KFBB News Team

State democrats say they believe Congressman Denny Rehberg's office may have made some potentially illegal automated calls to Great Falls residents, but Rehberg's office says the calls were legal and Congressionally approved.

The Montana Democratic Party says some Great Falls residents reported receiving an automated call from Congressman Rehberg, inviting them to join him in a "town hall" discussion over the phone.

Democrats point to Montana law, which states that: "A person may not use an automated telephone system, device, or facsimile machine for the selection and dialing of telephone numbers and playing of recorded messages, if a message is completed to the dialed number for the purpose of promoting a political campaign or any use related to a political campaign."

A spokesman for Rehberg's office told NewsChannel 5 that the calls were not in violation of Montana law and were part of Rehberg's official duties, not his re-election campaign. The office says the calls were Congressional calls, approved by the House Franking Committee.
