Fire Suppression Committee Meets in Choteau

It has been a quiet summer for fires in Montana, but lawmakers are working hard to prepare for future outbreaks.

A legislative committee concerned about the rising costs of fighting wildfires met Wednesday (8/20) in Choteau.

The event was the last monthly meeting the Fire Suppression Interim Committee will hold outside Helena, after stops in several cities around the state.

They are collecting suggestions from the public about ways to better combat the blazes. The committee says so far this year only about $3 million has been spent on fighting fires statewide, but that doesn't mean the problem has gone away.

The committee says they have received a lot of valuable feedback from the public in person and a record number of written comments.

The group now plans on submitting a final report with recommendations to the next Legislature.
