Exploring the Urban Art Project

By KFBB News Team

You may have driven by and never even noticed it. There’s an art display on the outside of one parking garage in downtown Great Falls. Artists from around the state proudly showcase their work in this not so common location better known as the urban art project. In 2005, Former Great Falls High art teacher Jean Price drove by the parking garage across from Bert and Ernie’s and noticed empty display windows. They were meant to be used for advertising but were often left vacant so Price decided to ask the Downtown Business Association if she could fill them with art. The response to the first showcase was tremendous and the display became permanent. There are eleven windows and after three shows a year for three years, 99 works of art have been shown. “It’s a different venue and it’s a different way to show my work and things. I wouldn’t even do if it wasn’t for this opportunity,” one artist said. After 25 years of teaching art, Price knows how to recruit artists. Works for the next display will come from as far away as California and Oregon but most are by local artists committed to enhancing the beauty and culture of Great Falls. "It brings art to the street which is the nicest part” added another artist. Aside from it's unusual location the Urban Art Project is different than museums and galleries because it's free and open to the public twenty-four hours a day. If you'd like to see the art for yourself go to 315 First Avenue South. The current display will run through January 5th.
