Minimum Wage Bills Have Different Outcomes

There is some good and some bad news today for those making minimum wage in our area.

Senate bill 254, a bill to decrease the minimum wage, failed in committee this morning by a vote of 9-2. This is the bill that would have removed the inflation indexing provision in the minimum wage law passed by voter initiative 151. Opponents argued the bill would lower the minimum wage for workers and circumvent the intent of Montana’s voters. You may recall, initiative 151 passed with support from more than 70 percent of Montana voters in 2006.

On the other hand, senate bill 253, which would lower the minimum wage on restaurant servers, delivery drivers and other tipped employees passed in committee Friday.
