Do People Drink More in a Bad Economy?

By KFBB News Team

During times when the economy is bad, people often prioritize when it comes to "need vs. necessity." But what category does alcohol fall under?

Formerly Pioneer Garage and Fender Chevrolet, the Belt Creek Brew Pub is known for its growlers of harvest moon beer and its festive atmosphere. And the pub's walls serve as a virtual Museum for the town of Belt.

"People would bring in their hub caps and license plates," said Owner Thad Stinson "We had no idea what this place was going to look like. Now we are running out of room. It's a lot of fun."

Stinson has customers from Great Falls, Stanford, Geyser, Ft. Benton, Geraldine and beyond. Like in many places across the country, the Belt Brew Pub remains economically sound as people want to enjoy a few pints and visit with others.

"People sit down and want to talk about what's going on. I wouldn't say bars are recession proof. But we hold our own because it's a nice place for people to visit and get together."

In a time of economic uncertainty, local pubs often serve as a place of community congregation. As folks look to relieve stress and find understanding.

"I think they rely on it very much," said Bartender Erin Williams. "They come down here and get away. It's a stress reliever."

"It's a place to come and share with people who might be having the same problem," said patron Chad Nuckols.

Whether it’s the Belt Creek Brew Pub or an establishment in Anytown U.S.A., no recession will stop people from hoisting a few while taking a break from their worries.
