Senator Tester Meets Amtrak CEO to Discuss Passenger Rail Service in Montana

By KFBB News Team

Amtrak CEO Joseph Boardman arrived in Havre Saturday afternoon on the Empire Builder line, which serves Montana's Hi-line. This is currently the only rail passenger train serving the state. Senator Tester is looking to reassess Montana's transportation networks and potentially expand passenger rail service to other parts of the state in the future.

Senator Tester says he recognizes the importance of bringing Montana's transportation system into the 21st century. That's why he is in talks with Amtrak's CEO about exploring the possibility of bringing more Amtrak service to the Big Sky State.

Tester recently passed a measure in Congress that is part of a 5-year, $13 billion Amtrak funding bill. The measure requires Amtrak to study the feasibility of restoring a route covering the southern portion of the state from Missoula to Glendive. This formerly existing route was discontinued in 1979.

According to Senator Tester, a record number of people are riding Amtrak, and it only makes sense to give Montanans as many transportation options as possible. Studies will be conducted over the next few months to determine whether or not there is in fact enough demand to expand passenger rail service in the state.
