Paris Gibson Mansion Restoration Begins

By KFBB News Team

It's a local historical treasure that dates back more than 100 years, but today there are very few people who know about it. One Great Falls woman is looking to change that. While many people know Paris Gibson was the founder and first mayor of Great Falls, few people know that the house where died still stands today. One local realtor just bought the house and today (6/16) meet with contractors to uncover it's secrets and find out if she can restore it to it's original glory. The house built on the corner of Fourth Avenue North Forth Street was built in 1890 when Great Falls was only six years old. Driving by the home today few clues remain about its history. "I've driven by for years…and always wondered about it…it looked sad and I couldn't understand what it was,” said new owner Kelly Parks. But during brief conservation with a friend that owned the property- - she found out. The owner of the old own of the property told her Paris Gibson died in the home, a key selling point for Parks. The home officially became hers on June 10th. She said, "First I was excited… now I’m scared.” No matter the time and cost- -her goal is to restore the mansion to its original glory. This afternoon she got a closer look at what that will take. She found that under layers of stucco, the original wood boards remained in excellent condition on the outside of the home. If walls could talk, they would tell a similar story for the inside of the home. Though the rooms currently are rented out, as apartments many original features remain largely intact. Parks concluded, "I think one of most important history buildings in North Central Montana and I’m glad to have it." Though this will be a private residence when the project is completed Parks says she intends to have a public viewing so the community can get a glimpse back into what life was like when Great Falls 120 years ago.
