Montanans Looking For Summer Vacations on the Cheap

Summer is here, the kids are out of school, and it's time for vacation. But with money tight this year, many people are looking for ways to stretch their dollars further this Summer.

Montana may be the bright spot in the economy, but that doesn't mean that folks aren't tightening their budgets. For those looking to get away this Summer, it's all about vacationing on the cheap.

Susan Agostinelli of Davidson Travel in Great Falls says more people are waiting until the last minute to book a vacation-to see if prices come down. Agostinelli says, "People are booking not as far out, so they're planning their trips where they're leaving within three months versus six or nine months."

And once that flight is booked, people are packing less now that airlines are charging for bags. Agostinelli says, " They're being nickeled and dimed. Once they already buy a plane ticket, that isn't the last of it. They have to pay for bags."

And some travelers are ditching the hotels and heading out to sea, in hopes of stretching their dollars. Agostinelli says, "We have seen an increase in the cruise business and part of that is the value of that trip at the moment."

It's also becoming more and more common for Mom and Dad to go on vacation and leave the kids at home, giving a whole new meaning to Summer family vacations.

There are also other ways to book a Summer vacation and save money. Try and pack light. Agostinelli says 90 percent of people way overpack. Also, consider flying out of a bigger city where airfare is often cheaper.
