Fire Chief Accused of Fleeing the Scene of Fatal Accident Allowed to Leave State Until Further Trial Proceedings

By KFBB News Team

A local volunteer fire chief accused of fatally striking 21-year-old Sasha Holt with his vehicle and fleeing the scene last Wednesday (7/1) has been allowed to leave the state of Montana with his family until further court proceedings.

38-year-old Jason Caughey was arrested Friday (7/3) but is currently free on $200,000 bail. Caughey has resigned from his job as an instructor at the MSU Fire Service Training School and Judge Dirk Sandefur granted his lawyer's request to allow Caughey to return to the state of Minnesota with his family until further hearings.

The victim's family say they were outraged by that decision.

"I'm not a mean person, but I don't want this swept away," said Diane Walden, Sasha Holt's mother. "He should have to pay for what he did to my sweetheart."

Court documents released Monday (7/6) state that a search by the Montana Highway Patrol of Caughey's home found that damage to his Nissan Xterra was consistent with the scene of the accident and matched vehicle fragments found at the scene.

The court documents also state that Caughey initially told a Cascade County Sheriff's Deputy that he believed he was the second vehicle who struck the girl and initially thought he had hit a dog instead.

if he would have stopped and called for help would the 2nd car have hit her? even if you hit a deer you stop to look you don't just keep going sad all the way around everyone loses

if they find this man truly did not know he was involved in an accident, been telling the truth the entire time, and all the evidence supports that, then what? You don't think he lost anything? He's been living as pending felon, probably can't get a job, loses all the time and $ involved with this whole ordeal, and lost his entire identity due to the negative press. He probably can't win either way. I feel if he was just a "joe Shmoe" then it this might have been dropped a long time ago too. Nobody understands that. I am a dad, and I couldn't imagine the sadness you feel. There has to be some explanation for you to find peace in this, that is understandable. But this was an accident, and there has been a lot of time lost for many involved in this, for your family too. I pray you find peace and reasoning for your loss.

this is too unfortunate. K is right. She should haunt the last guy who saw her alive, where is he? All the other people involved were doing were driving, who would suspect any person to be walking or laying in a road with no shoulder like that? Why was she out there? What was she doing to put herself in that position? How come the people who were just driving down a dark road at night the only one to be held accountable for some many actions that night. If somebody was looking out for her, maybe nobody would have had to loose any of their lives that night. You would expect to run over a deer on that road, not a person. Why does everybody think Mr. Cuaghey is just trying to cover something up? If he was in law enforcment, woudln't he know it's worse to flee and accident? WHy is this person being the only one being held with this doubt. It was an accident, not a murder scene. This person is not a criminal and he is being treated like one with all the unfair speculations.

I would also like to add: Where is the person who left this poor, enibriated, woman, out in the middle of a dark, deserted, road to fend for herself in the 1st place. She was laying in the road when her leg was run over, people--not walking upright. This guy would be the lowest scum if you really want to judge. Who in their right minds would leave her in this potentially dangerous environemnt, under dangerous circumstances (being drunk)? I'm sure somebody has some guilt going on with all that has happened to both people involved. Yet--one person has to take responsibility for all the irresponsible actions that has taken place.

It's understandable why people would still be upset at Jason, nobody really knows what has happened. He is the last person of quality to be termed "garbage", and would have stopped if he had intially known what he did. FAR from running because he did anything wrong (and wasn't drunk - that is speculation and gossip). She was being repsonsible by walking home, but she wasn't walking when Caughey was driving. She was walking alone, obviously trying to leave a situaion, not just to 'walk home responsibly'--It would be hard to walk period when your BAC is over .20. Nobody deserves anything that has happened to them, it's very unfortunate. Please don't think that this guy is a criminal (walking free) and deserves jail time, it was a very unfortunate accident. He has lost his life too, but has to continue to live with this everyday. He has still continued to be upstanding citizen, and has been doing everything needed to follow through with this responsibly.

there is too much ignorance involved in knowing the story that anybody should judge. It was purely all an accident. If anybody reading these really knew what all happened, you should know the 2nd vehicle should be the one being chastized. He did a lot worse to this girl --Caughey never knew he hit anything. It's all very unfotunate for all involved. Very sorry for the loss.

Jason deserves to go to jail. Evan if Sasha was drunk, she was smart enough to walk home. Jason was the one who was drunk and driving. Thats why he ran.

My heart goes out to the family of the young girl. I am sorry to hear of your loss. You are right people make mistakes but for crying out loud never leave a human inneed of help, especially medically. That was wrong of him and he shouldn't of been able to leave the state. Hope he doesn't flea the state for good. Once again i am sorry to hear about your loss my the lord be with you and your family and I will say a prayer for your precious daughter and for your family that justice be served.

It was an unintentional accident. Accidents happen. You should really look in the mirror before you judge, or decide what should happen to him. He was set free on $200,000 bail. He has been nothing but an upstanding public servant for years. He has never had so much as a traffic ticket. In all honesty, I hope he is found not guilty of all charges. I'm not saying she deserved what she got, but she was walking home, drunk, from a party, in the middle of a dark road with no shoulder. Sounds like some common sense on both sides might have saved everyone a lot of heart ache.

Regardless of whether or not it was an accident, he left her there in the road like a piece of garbage... a human being, a 21 year old girl. I can't believe that someone so low and disgusting is paid to protect people, and I hope he never is again. And furthermore it is an outrage that he is walking around free.

I just feel that Jason was in a very wrong place at a very wrong time. He was a victim of circumstance and nothing else. I know how appauling this seems, how could someone possibly leave the scene of such an accident? Please just put yourself or a loved one in HIS shoes. Panic, terror, shock? I do not know how I would react if I hit a human being, nor do you. You may say you would stop, no doubt about it... but truthfully, you will never know until you are forced to stare such a horrific event

Miss said on Monday, Jul 13 at 3:42 AM

First and foremost, I am so sorry for the loss of Sasha Holt. I can understand how upset you all are, but I am coming from a different side. I personally know Jason Caughey and know this was unintentional. Please know that not one life, but two were lost on Fox Farm Road that night. Jason is miserable and will never be the same again. He contemplated suicide, but than did the right thing and chose to be repremanded for this tragedy instead. My heart aches for both of them. I just feel that

Sasha has been in our family for a long time and she was my sisters best friend. She will be deeply missed. I hope he gets whats coming to him.

Angela said on Wednesday, Jul 8 at 4:44 PM

Sasha was a friend of mine, she had a big heart. Anyone who came along she befriended. Yes it seemed to have been an accident but Sasha was a human being and should be treated as such. And I agree with her mother, he should get punishment for killing this beautiful young woman whom I called a friend.....not a slap on the wrist. RIP SASHA!!! WE ALL LOVE AND MISS YOU!!!

Dave said on Tuesday, Jul 7 at 12:10 PM

I think he should be punished for leaving the scene, but it sounds like it was a pure and simple accident. With the speed limit and no shoulder, no one should be walking along that road.
