Gray Wolves to be Hunted in Montana

By KFBB News Team

Montana and Idaho are moving to host the first open gray wolf hunts in the continental United States after the animal's removal from the endangered list.

On Wednesday in Montana, wildlife commissioners voted to let hunters throughout the state shoot 75 wolves beginning in mid-September. This equals about 15% of the gray wolf population in the state.

Legal challenges to the hunts are inevitable, as environmentalists say the wolves could once again be driven toward extinction. However, state wildlife managers argue that quotas are crucial to keeping the fast-breeding animals in check to limit attacks on domestic sheep and calves.
