The community of Wolf Creek is inching closer to getting its own sewer system. But not everyone is happy about that. The project has an estimated price tag of 2.3 million dollars.

While the proposal has been met with some opposition, Wolf Creek is applying and securing federal and state grants to build the system.

After complaints of septic system problems in Craig and Wolf Creek, Lewis and Clark County received a grand to do conduct a study on sewage treatment in those communities.

Now, after the forming of a sewer district, the 50 homes and businesses of Wolf Creek are primed for the construction of a highly technical waste water treatment system.

"We found elevated levels of nitrates in the drinking water and some businesses are unable to expand because there is just no room for a drain field," said Lewis and Clark County Grants Coordinator Laura Erikson.

Receiving $750,000 from the Treasure State Endowment Program, Wolf Creek also got a boost from Senators Baucus and Tester, who helped secure about $530,000 from the Resources Development Act Grant, associated with the the government stimulus package.

"The sewer will allow the town to develop a little more and be better for the health of the canyon and the water system," said Wolf Creek Business Owner Paul Beister.

But not everyone is thrilled. The remaining balance for the plan could be paid with taxes.

McDonough: "I don't want it shoved down my throat," said Wolf Creek Resident Jack McDonough. "I have never had any trouble. I had mine pumped eight years ago and they said it was in A-1 condition."

Desptie some opposition, the community of Wolf Creek appears to be on its way to having its own sewer system.

The next step is finding a location. Erikson adds that they are in talks with landowners and getting appraisels. Once a site is obtained, an environmental analysis will be conducted.
