Citizens Try to Stop Closure of Black Eagle Post Office

The Black Eagle Post Office is in jeopardy of closing its doors. But some concerned citizens say "not so fast!" A group of Black Eagle residents presented the Great Falls Postmaster with a petition to save their post office.

On July 21st, the United States Postal Service announced that the Black Eagle location is among about 3,000 post offices being considered for closure.

The group collected about 1,000 signatures in just five days. They say they'll do whatever it takes to keep the post office open.

"We worked quickly to collect the signatures," said Robin Western of Black Eagle. "We turned it in and hopefully Dave (Postmaster Dave Chivaras) will realize that we do not want our post office closed."

"The United States Postal Service has decided they want it closed to save money," said Rick Hutchinson of Black Eagle. "But closing this office will not reduce the cost of a stamp. It will result in inconvenience for an aging population and remove that sense of community."

The Federal Government is expected to decide which post offices will close by October.
