Kennel Cough Outbreak in Great Falls

By KFBB News Team

Dr. Kelly Manzer might see a case of kennel cough about once a month. But in the past two weeks, her office has treated two cases a day. Dr.Manzer says, "People call and believe their dog has something stuck in the throat. Classic signs of kennel cough."

Kennel cough usually lasts about a week and can be treated with a cough suppressant and antibiotics. Dr.Manzer says it tends to spread in areas where many dogs are close together. The dogs usually have a history of being at a park or a kennel or a boarding facility.

Though current vaccinations are required at the new dog park, the Animal Foundation says there is no way to enforce this. And its up to you to make sure your canine plays by the rules.

Over at Weona and F&L Pet Resorts they are making every effort to disinfect, but at the end of the day, they can only do so much. Dr.Manzer says it's up to the owners, to make sure your dog is up to date with it's kennel cough vaccine.

This obviously is a side impact of the dog park. Personally our dogs are vaccinated, but a spotlight on this subject could help.
