Campaign to Stop Grizzly Deaths

By KFBB News Team

Federal and state wildlife agencies are launching a campaign to decrease the number of grizzly killings in the Yellowstone area.
A record 79 grizzly bear deaths occurred last year, and 48 of those deaths were caused by humans.
Yellowstone's grizzlies were removed from the endangered species list in 2007, but if the numbers continue this year, the grizzlies endangered status must be reviewed.
This new campaign will include increased back-country ranger patrol, as well as thousands of posted grizzly warning signs.
Hunters and hikers will now be encouraged to use pepper spray rather than firearms if approached by a bear.
To date, 17 grizzlies have died in the Yellowstone region this year.
