Group Holds Medical Marijuana Sign Up Clinic in Great Falls

Montana is one of 14 states in the U.S. that allow medical marijuana use. In 2004, Montana voters passed an initiative allowing those with specific medical conditions to alleviate their symptoms through the limited use of medical marijuana.

Here in Great Falls, a Montana group is working to help hundreds of potential patients acquire the drug.

"The Montana Caregivers Network is an organization that is built to pair caregivers and patients together,” said Jason Christ, the Operations Director of the Montana Caregivers Network. “We help patients get with a doctor to get their medical marijuana card."

The group also provides education about the various strains of marijuana, their medical uses, and legal information. Under Montana law, patients and their registered caregivers are allowed to posses six pot plants and one ounce of useable marijuana. But Christ says the issue is still taboo.

"We recognize a lot of vagueness with respect for medical marijuana in the state," he said.

That vagueness may stem from the fact that the use and possession of cannabis, even for medical purposes, is still against federal law. But this week, U.S Attorneys in states allowing medical marijuana were instructed not to pursue cases against users that follow those state laws.

Christ added, "We have Obama's administration and this new federal mandate. And together, patients and caregivers are completely safe."

The group is holding a class for potential patients, caregivers and current card-holders called "Weed University" on November first at the civic center. For more information call the Montana Caregivers Network at 207-7078.
