Great Falls Residents Rate President One Year After Election

By KFBB News Team

It was one year ago on Election Day, that Barack Obama defeated John McCain to become the 44th President of the United States. But how has he done since taking office? News Channel 5 hit the streets today to find out what kind of approval ratings Great Falls gives the President.

President Obama’s approval rating nationally is 53%. That's according to statistical research company Gallup. That company has also determined that Americans have become less sure that he will be able to accomplish a number of his administration's goals.

Let’s take a look at what Great Falls residents think, one year after Obama won twice as many electoral votes as John McCain.

Great Falls residents had plenty to say about this issue.

"I think he's doing a lousy job,” said Steve Forbes of Great Falls. “I don't agree with any of his policies and don't think his policies are helping the country."

"All in all i'm pretty satisfied,” said Mike Carroll of Great Falls. “We'll see what he does with health care."

The Gallup polling organization says Obama's approval numbers are slightly ahead of President Clinton’s one year after his election, and essentially tied with President Reagan's in 1981.

"I think he's doing the best he can with what he's got,” said Kristina Becker of Great Falls. “He's trying to make a difference and is doing a good job."

"If he is upset about the deficit he inherited, then I'm upset that he decided to handle it by tripling out debt,” Tracy Beaver said.

Since the election, his popularity soared to a high-mark of 69% approval, and hit a low of 50%.

"He’s done very poorly,” said Kathy Bates of Great Falls. “I think he is going down the wrong path all together."

"He inherited quite a mess,” said Dan Mitchell of Great Falls. “The recession seems to be turning around. I'm pretty happy with how he’s done."

"Not very well,” said Jan Carter. “The economy is struggling and the government is giving out too much to the people."

"He's doing the best he can with all the trouble he has to deal with,” said Dotty White.

Previous President George W. Bush had an approval rating of 87% at his one-year mark, but that was shortly after the terrorist attacks of 9/11. That changed dramatically, as President Bush left office with an approval rating below 30%.
