Montana Historical Society to Launch Glacier Park Exhibit

By KFBB News Team

The Montana Historical Society in Helena is about to reveal one of its most ambitious exhibits ever.

On Thursday night the society will have the grand opening of the new exhibit titled, “Land of Many Stories: The People and History of Glacier National Park.” The park will be celebrating its centennial in 2010, and the exhibit honors the role it has played in the history of Montana.

The exhibit, which will be displayed through February of 2011, is designed so visitors actually have the experience of finding their way through it, as though they were on a hike. Historic photos, artwork, and artifacts will be featured.

Jennifer Bottomly-O’Looney, Curator of Collections, explains, “It explores the many ways people have used the area from pre-European contact even to today, and although it shows how much things have changed through the years, things really have stayed the same.”

The grand opening ceremony takes place Thursday night at 6:30 in the Rotunda of the State Capitol. Society Director Richard Simms, in addition to other dignitaries, will offer opening remarks, and the keynote talk will be by Tim Cahill, a long-time Glacier park advocate and the founding editor of Outside Magazine.

The event is open to the public, and after the talk attendees are invited across the street to tour the new exhibit. If you can’t make it but would like to see the exhibit, the museum is open from 9-5 Monday through Saturday.
