Write-In Candidate Wins Cut Bank Mayoral Race

Tuesday several mayoral races were decided in an unusual way. NewsChannel 5 headed to the Hi-Line to learn more about a lopsided mayoral race, won by a man not even on the ballot.

In April, Doug Embody become the interim Mayor of Cut Bank, following the resignation of Joni Stewart. But embody had no intention of running for the position, until very late in the process. So, his name was left off the ballot.

“To take the time to fill it out it says the people like what we are doing," Embody said.

Write-in candidates usually lose, as some voters misspell the name, don't check the box, or simply forget about the candidate. But the people of Cut Bank elected Embody in a landslide.

"It's remarkable to me that 784 people took time to write his name and check the box," said Glacier County Assistant Elections Administrator Diane Troefrock.

“The people of Cut Bank wanted someone who will work for Cut Bank,” said voter Verena Farrell.

Running on a platform of city cleanup and promoting new business development, Embody looks forward to the challenges of being mayor.

"We're going to start a litter program to clean-up the city and attract more business."

Although name was not on last night's ballot, 784 people new the name, and now trust that Doug Embody will lead Cut Bank in the right direction.

A very similar situation exists in Fort Benton, as incumbent Mayor Rick Morris won as a write-in candidate. Also, in Hingham, Ray Lipp won by write-in as well. Lipp did not even run. There is no word yet on if he will accept that position.
