With Thanksgiving only one week away, one local Helena organization is doing its part to make sure everyone's stomach is satisfied.

For more than two decades, the Helena Food Share has provided food for families in need. Currently, an increasing number of families are looking for help.

Ann Waickman, Executive Director of Helena Food Share, explains, "Food Share has seen a 25% increase this year compared to where we were at this time last year. The economy is struggling here as it is across the country. We have not seen an improvement in the situation"

Cheryl Cote, a volunteer, adds, "Just being here, you see how many people actually take advantage of what is offered here."

The community-based organization acts as both food bank and food pantry, and provides daily and monthly grocery programs. Right now, the focus is on Thanksgiving. The food share will be providing Thanksgiving meals to over 1,300 families.

Waickman says, "They will have access to a turkey, stuffing, cranberries, canned vegetables, canned fruit, and if we have donated pumpkin or donated yams left they will have access to that as well."

Since the Helena Food Share is private non-profit, over 90% of its revenue and food comes directly from the community.

Waickman explains, "We're hoping to have enough turkeys. We are still asking the community to help provide turkeys to us. We are also looking for boxed puddings and jello."

Those at the Helena Food Share say keeping the community hunger-free requires a combined effort.

Waickman adds, "Helena Food Share's goal is to create a hunger-free community. We most certainly cannot do that on our own. It will take all of us. We do feel proud to be part of a community that continues to make it possible for us to meet the need."
