Helena Man Who Supplied Handgun in Deadly Summer Shooting Sentenced to Federal Prison

By The Associated Press

HELENA, Mont. - A Helena man who supplied the handgun that a 17-year-old used to kill one teen and injure two others has been sentenced to three months in federal prison.

Jared T. Cox was sentenced Monday by U.S. Magistrate Keith Strong, who also placed Cox on one year of supervised release and fined him $500. Cox was released Monday and ordered to report to the Bureau of Prisons when called.

Cox, who is 21, pleaded guilty in October to transferring a handgun to a juvenile, in this case, Sebastian Olivares-Coster. He said Olivares-Coster gave him money to purchase the gun in May, saying it was for "home protection."

Last week, Olivares-Coster pleaded guilty to deliberate homicide in the June death of 16-year-old Cory Andrewski and to two counts of attempted deliberate homicide for shooting and severely injuring 16-year-old Joey Wohlers and 15-year-old Kahner Leary.
