Downtown Great Falls Fire: 6 Months Later

Exactly six months ago, a fire destroyed the Set-Free Ministries building in downtown Great Falls. Last week the State Crime Lab released its findings on the fire, which showed no evidence of foul play, though the exact cause is still unknown. But, we wanted to find out what lies ahead for the people who lost nearly everything back in May.

It was a late-night fire that left several people homeless, forced a ministry out of its headquarters and shut down two local businesses. The historic building on Central Avenue in downtown Great Falls sits empty now, structurally sound, but waiting to be restored.

"The cost is going to be substantial,” said Pastor JT Coughlan, the Senior Pastor at Set-Free Ministries. “It's gonna be way more than we paid for the building. We just believe God's got it under control and the finances are going to come in."

"If he rebuilds it, it's going to be all new and fresh and a lot more fire safe,” explained Battalion Chief Steve Gonser of Great Falls Fire Rescue. “It'll have brand new wiring. They were in the process of redoing the wiring when the fire happened. It'll be a much safer building."

Shortly after the fire, the owner and the tenants of the building were determined to get back to work. Set-Free resumed their food donations and set up a new clothing thrift store.

Public Drug managed to save their patient records, move down the street and resume delivery service.

"Within two weeks we were filling prescriptions, and within three weeks we had the over the counter and everyday items that they were looking for," said Assistant Manager Kerri Anderson.

But the transition has been challenging.

"It's been an adjustment for sure,” said Anderson. “We're very cozy in here. It's only one-third the size of our old store, so it's been a challenge to squeeze everything in and keep the items that the customers want."

The adjustment was harder still for Jeanie Dickenson, the woman behind Mountains of Memories Scrapbooks. She lived in an apartment behind the store, and much of the space was heavily damaged by the water used to fight the fire. After a short stint in a friend's store, the specialty shop closed for good. But the dream is still there.

"To help people record their memories- whether it's scrapbooking, home decor items or cards to give to people- to help them do it in an economical way," Dickenson explained.

That's why Dickenson is starting a website and running a blog from a family member's home in Wyoming. She does plan to return to Great Falls for quarterly scrapbooking retreats.

Half a year has passed since this devastating fire, and though there's much to rebuild, a community stands ready to pitch in and help.

"I mean, everybody's bent over backwards for us- donations for clothes, for food, stuff like that has been awesome,” said Coughlan. “And everywhere I go people are encouraging us to get it back up and running."
