Holiday Weekend Marks End of Hunting Season in Montana

This holiday weekend marks the end of hunting season in Montana. Fish, Wildlife and Parks says overall the season went fairly well, checking a little over 900 animals in Augusta alone. But most hunters were not too happy with what mother nature had in store. Deer and elk hunting didn't go as well this season because of a lack of snow and the mild fall weather.

Hunter Bob Little says, "I think the weather didn't cooperate as far as bringing the animals out where they're accessible or what not. It was way too warm for this time of year." Hunter Steve French agreed saying, "Last two years, it hasn't snowed. And it really affects the bucks that don't come down because of the snow you know."

Mule deer numbers are down this season, so Fish, Wildlife and Parks may make some changes for next season to limit the number that are harvested. Brent Lonner tells News Channel Five, "We're looking at possibly going to mule deer doe permits for several of the hunting districts on the front."

And even though the warm weather may have spoiled the chances of taking home a trophy buck today, some were just excited to spend the time outdoors. Hunter Vance Gilbraith says, "Just a chance to get out and about I didn't kill anything but that's not really what its about anyway at my age. I killed enough that it doesn't matter if I get anything else or not."

Fish Wildlife and Parks is not planning any season extensions anywhere in the state this year because of the fairly good harvest.
