Area Law Enforcement Agencies Talk Policy Following Seattle Slayings

The manhunt is over for an ex-con accused of murdering four police officers in a Western Washington coffee shop. Now some law enforcement agencies are reviewing or changing their own policies, in hopes of avoiding a future ambush.

The Cascade County Sheriff's Office says the shooting serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of the job.

On Tuesday, after stopping a stolen car, a Seattle police officer shot and killed accused cop killer Maurice Clemons, after he was said to reach for a gun. This ends two days of fear in the Seattle-Tacoma area, following the slaying of four police officers in a coffee shop.

Here in Cascade County, Captain Ray Hitchcock says attacks like these can happen anywhere.

"When we put on the uniform, we have to be aware that we are potential targets for violent crime."

Some agencies are making procedure changes. The Spokane Police Department will now require one officer whose sole responsibility is to stand guard, when a group of officers take a break in a public place. In addition, officers will no longer work on reports in their patrol cars.

That is a policy already adopted by the Cascade County Sheriff's, as deputies return to the station for any paperwork or reports. Also, deputies and officers receive ongoing training, such as street survival seminars, to prepare them for violent situations like the Tacoma area shooting.

"You try not to put yourself in a situation where you are not aware of what's going on around you."

Captain Hitchcock adds that although they don't plan on changing procedures, this shooting should heighten awareness for all law enforcement and reminds us that they are targets.

"We do take risks by doing the job we do ever day. I have nothing but respect for the men of this office."

A representative from the Great Falls Police told News Channel 5 that the department is also satisfied with its procedures. They do have a rule that no more than two officers can congregate in a public place, during a break.
