Great Falls Military Retirement Marked by Honor

Sergeant Larry Bowman's retirement from active duty was marked this morning with a special honor, as he became the first Staff Sergeant in National Guard history to be awarded with the Legion of Merit.

He also received an Army Commendation Medal and a Montana Army National Guard Distinguished Service Medal, in addition to an official letter from Governor Schweitzer.

SSG Bowman was very touched and honored by the ceremony and awards, saying, “Just to see all these people come together and talk to me and to put these awards together - it is just really wonderful. If you keep everything on a positive note, even when you have bad things happen to you, you can find a little bit of good in that, and if you can bring a smile to people’s faces, that works out quite well.”

Sergeant Bowman began his career in the military back in 1969, when he enlisted into the United States Air Force as a security police officer. He completed two tours of duty in Vietnam as well as touring in Baghdad as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sergeant Bowman currently serves as a substitute teacher at great falls high school.
