In today's economy, you hear stories about people across the country cutting back on luxury items and services to make ends meet. But for many, the line between luxury and necessity can be blurry, especially when it comes to looking good.

How many people does it take to cut hair? At the Salon Professional Academy, it takes two, a student and an instructor, working together to satisfy one client. Providing hands-on experience for cosmetology students is not a new practice, but for those who take a seat in these chairs, the price is right, now more than ever.

"You know, price is key,” said cosmetology student Kristen Lorang. “But I think also they know the quality of education we receive here. They know the instructors have been out in the real world. So, the not only are they paying half price, but they're getting a quality service and that keeps them coming back."

So much so that business at the salon was up last month from the previous January.

"It’s a bread and butter kind of business,” explains Lorang. “You're not going to let a month go because the economy is kind of bad. I've noticed, if anything, it's kind of picked up because people are trying to do something to feel better about themselves when the money situation isn't so good."

Cosmetology instructors tell us young professionals-especially women-see regular hair appointments as a necessity. They say the school's low prices and late weeknight hours make it an attractive option for young women. Plus, the instructors receive regular training on how to cut the latest styles, training they pass on to their students.

Lorang says many of her clients want hip, trendy hair, "We live in Montana, so people think we're behind. But, really we're catching up! People are trying to fun and fashionable and they don't care if they have to spend 30 bucks to some in next month. They're here, so it's kind of fun."

The Salon Professional Academy offers classes in cosmetology, manicuring, esthetics and massage.

They are located at 501 2nd Street South. To visit the salon’s website click here
