After this week's packed city commission meeting, the controversy over businesses looking to serve medical marijuana patients continues.

While city commissioners voted to institute a 90 day moratorium on medical marijuana operations within Great Falls city limits, there is no such rule in place for Cascade County.

However, businesses involving the growth or sale of medical marijuana do not fall under any county zoning categories, so by default they are zoned as I-2 or heavy industrial and must operate in commercial areas.

"We would anticipate that we will create a specific category that deals with the issues that we foresee with this type of business” explained Cascade County Commissioner Joe Briggs. “But, they are legal in the county, and they can operate in I-2 with a permit if they want to."

Other businesses that fall under special zoning categories include adult entertainment facilities or bars and casinos.

Briggs says the county has already received permit applications for medical marijuana operations.
