EPA Officially Adds Black Eagle to Proposed Superfund List

The community of Black Eagle is officially closer to receiving EPA funds to clean up contamination.

The EPA officially filed its proposal Thursday to add the former Anaconda Copper Mining Smelter and Refinery site to the national priorities list of superfund sites.

The listing marks the beginning of a 60 day public comment period about the proposed cleanup, and residents of Black Eagle and beyond are encouraged to share their thoughts.

"The folks up there have a lot of very good questions about how it will impact them during the cleanup, how property values will be affected after the cleanup, how long the cleanup will take,” noted Cascade County Commissioner Joe Briggs. “For the most part, this will be an opportunity for the public to, once again, weigh in on whether they think the Superfund listing is a good idea or not."

The EPA is sending information about the proposal to the Commissioners at the Courthouse Annex--that material is available for public viewing.
