High Prices Have Many Saying "Hold the Tomato"

Sandwiches and burgers across the country could be missing a favorite fixing, thanks to lingering cold in Florida. tomato prices are soaring as the nation's winter supply has dwindled--and local vendors are noticing the increase.

While you typically won't find the freshest tomatoes around during the winter--they still make an appearance on most standard restaurant sandwiches.

"The supply and demand isn't there,” said Erin Wood of 2J’s Fresh Market, “but we still have people buying tomatoes. Now, our suppliers are shorthanded."

That is because tomato growers in Florida lost about 70% of their crops during an especially cold winter, and the supply and demand cycle is pushing prices higher and higher. Restaurants are paying two or three times more for a case of tomatoes than they usually do, forcing them to make menu adjustments.

Jimette Schlimm of Montana Sub Shop says if prices stay high, they might reduce the number of tomatoes on each sandwich. She’s also considering making tomatoes an ingredient used by request only.

Wendy's restaurants around the country are doing just that—they’ve posted signs explaining the new policy on drive through speakers.

But the sandwich-makers at Montana Sub shop say they are not to that point yet, but expect thinner slices. Schlimm says as long as employees don’t waste tomatoes and practice portion control, they’ll still be included on sandwiches.

Employees at 2J's say the store is still stocking quality tomatoes, but restaurant owners tell us as the prices increase, quality can take a hit. So for now, all local stores and restaurants can do is wait for more crops to ripen and, supply and demand to even out.

"We usually get more local tomatoes in the summer,” said Wood. “So, hopefully we’ll see a drop in the prices."

Other restaurants we spoke to say they expect prices to drop as summer get closer, but until then they'll do their best to keep tomatoes on the menu.
