All Clear Given in Helena Building Evacuation, Authorities Say Package Sender Likely from Butte

By KFBB News Team

Around 9:00 a.m. today, a worker on the third floor of the Department of Labor and Industry Building in Helena opened a package that had a triggering device which sprayed a white powder out of it.

The entire third floor of the building was quickly evacuated, and four people, including a Helena police officer, who came in close contact with the powder were isolated in a conference room in the building. The building sits directly across the street from the Capitol Building.

Around 2:00 p.m., hazmat crews determined the powder was not harmful and the building was reopened.

Authorities say the package was sent to the Montana Office of Unemployment Insurance, and they believe the package came from the Butte area.
