High Schoolers Dig Deep for Missouri River Banks Project

By KFBB News Team

Erosion along the banks of the Missouri River can create trouble downstream, causing debris build-up that slows water flow.

it's an old problem that's been getting support from a young set of helpers.

The Missouri River along the Meadowlark Country Club have seen lots of erosion, caused by heavy recreation use, and banks covered in rocks and old car bodies.

Today freshmen science students from Great Falls High School joined state biologists in making a new riverbank of willow trees, stacking up layers of dirt, recycled plants, and fabric.

By the time the students are finished working, this area will be a muddy mess of old Christmas Trees. But by early Spring, this riverbank will be lush and green. The willow trees are expected to bud in about two to three weeks.

In class, these science students have been studying Geology, researching how Montana's conservation efforts and policies came into practice.

And even after working only one day on the project, many students are walking away with a better grasp on the science and how it applies to the river they see almost every day.
