Arsenic Found On Sports Field

By KFBB News Team

A popular Helena sports complex is closing one of its fields for an indefinite amount of time, after finding high levels of arsenic on that land.
Field 13 at Ryan Fields Complex underwent sample testing with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
The preliminary results show elevated levels of arsenic on that specific field.
In order to protect public health, Lewis and Clark County has closed that field, at least until additional testing is complete.
A metal ore mill from the 1930's once operated at the location of the sports complex, and tailings containing high levels of metal were dumped directly on that ground surface.
The result was contamination of on-site soil and ground water.
The initial data in the testing on field 13 was conducted by BNSF railway, as railroad operations may have added to contamination.
