Expect Extra Patrols for St. Patrick's Day

By KFBB News Team

While many people may remind us to wear green tomorrow, the Montana Department of Transportation has its own warning about St. Patrick's Day.

MDT, the Montana Highway Patrol and local law enforcement are teaming up to keep drunk drivers off the road during St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Officials with MHP say the holiday revolves around drinking for many, and hopefully the extra patrols and traffic stops around the state will convince some partiers to call a cab or designate a driver.

"The Montana Highway Patrol is providing a team of special event support personnel from the Highway Patrol,” said Trooper Phillip Freed of MHP. “And we're going to augment the local law enforcement--just to make sure that things are safe and everybody has a good time without getting hurt."

The added patrols are funded by a grant from MDT's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program or STEP. That money allows law enforcement to focus on traffic safety, make sure motorists are buckled up, and prevent drunk driving.
