Great Falls City Commission Votes on Proposed Plan For a South Arterial

By KFBB News Team

The Great Falls City Commission has decided to move forward with plans for a south arterial, but not the one suggested in the south arterial alignment study.

At Tuesday night's city commission meeting, commissioner Bill Bronson proposed moving the road south of the suggested alignment and closer to a path that had been proposed in the past, to avoid destroying any houses.

Bronson's recommendation passed by a 3-1 vote. Commissioner Mary Jolley voted against the measure and Mayor Michael Winters abstained.

Now it is up to a local planning group to make a final decision on whether to push the route into the next phase, which would evaluate how the arterial would effect the local environment.

The roadway is expected to reduce congestion on 10th Avenue South and improve air quality in the area. But concerns include the high cost to build it and the impact it would have on local businesses, people and public areas.
