Signature Gathering for Ballot Initiatives

By KFBB News Team

Secretary of State Linda McCulloch held an urgent press conference today regarding signature gathering for ballot initiatives.

McCulloch, who is also Montana's Chief Elections Officer, announced that she has been notified of allegations of possible statutory violations by signature gatherers in Montana.

Signature gatherers must be residents of Montana and cannot receive compensation based upon the number of signatures gathered.

In 2006 there were six court challenges to seven ballot measures, which is way McCulloch felt it necessary to send this preemptive message.

She said that all Montanans have a responsibility to make sure all measures reach the ballot through legal and legitimate means. Questions should be asked if something is not understood, and when signing, citizens need to realize their signature is their voice.

There are 13 ballot issue sponsors currently on file with the Secretary's office. No specific groups or initiatives were singled out in the allegations.
