State Game Warden Who Killed Bighorn Ram Says Investigation Forced Him to Kill

By The Associated Press

BOULDER, Mont. - A state game warden who killed a trophy bighorn ram as part of an undercover investigation says he shot the animal after missing several times out of fear of raising the suspicion of the man being investigated.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Justin Gibson testified Thursday in the trial of Whitehall taxidermist John Lewton. Lewton is charged in Jefferson County with buying the ram's head, horns, and cape knowing it had been killed illegally.

Lewton is accused of taking Gibson to the trophy ram with the aid of two colleagues with two-way radios and after crossing private land. He faces charges of outfitting without a license, trespassing and hunting without landowner permission in Chouteau County and felony possession of a game animal in Blaine County.
