Hundreds Hit the Streets for Annual MApril Cleanup

More than 750 people across our area grabbed a trash bag Saturday morning and hit the streets to help clean up their neighborhoods. It was all part of the MApril Cleanup event that started over 28 years ago.

Seven year-old Ethan Habets who participated in the event says, "Why do they put garbage around here? They should just throw it in the trash can. But they're not doing that. I don't lnow why they don't do that, it's just so weird."

Habets can not believe how many cigarette butts he is finding on the ground at Gibson park. Every step he takes, grader takes, he finds another piece of trash. Habets asks again, "Why do these people leave litter out here? I mean literally, that's the dumbest thing in the world to do."

Ethan is one of hundreds that are taking part in the Annual MApril Cleanup event, where people grab a black trash bag and hit the streets of Great Falls and Black Eagle. Vicky Golie from NeighborWorks who helped organize the event notes, "It's just a great opportunity for people to get out and be able to show their support in our community and clean up the area."

And for the Pack 26 Tiger Scouts, it is cigarette butt after cigarette butt in Gibson Park. An area that is popular with both families and wildlife. Another cub scout notes, "The park has lots of animals that could eat and have serious problems with their health and their breathing."

It is an eye opening experience that shows just how many people litter. Wendy Weissman, the Pack 26 Treasurer says, "They see that it effects the plants, and that it effects nature and that it's just ugly and how when people smoke they just throw their butts down on the ground and that's most of what we're finding." After today, these cub scouts will do their best to keep our city clean and they are hoping you will do the same.

The event was made possible thanks to the 250 volunteers from Malmstrom who collected all of the trash bags and Montana Waste System who took care of all the dumping fees. If you missed Saturday's cleanup, it is happening again next Saturday. To register, call 216-3520 or 761-5861.
