CMR Students Gear up For National HOSA Competition.

By Charlie Keegan

Six students from CM Russell High School will be competing in the national Health Occupation Students of America contest next month.

Students will compete in a variety of exercises including speeches, tests, CPR and sports medicine.

It costs $14,000 per person to go to California to compete. The students have started fundraising by doing yard work, hosting a bake sale and bagging groceries at 2J's.

“We do community service in healthcare related fields, we do have competitions in a variety of areas that will prepare us for our careers and also there’s kind of a fun aspect,” Darcy Lacey says.

“We help with the long-term community life centers and we also help the EMTs and the EMS people when they get their recertification for their safety courses,” Jordann Brown says.

“I just think it will help us bring more people into the club and that way we can help out the community in a greater aspect,” Jared Knupp says.

“I’m looking forward to bettering my event and seeing how I stand against national competitors,” Leslie Bellwood says.

“We’re all really well rounded, we have some athletes, we have a really diverse group. So it’s really cool to get everyone to meet on the same level” Kelsey Smith says.

“The skills that I learn in this event will benefit me in my future, in any career that I choose, especially the medical field,” Jessie Hardin says.

If you'd like to donate to help the students go to the national competition, call CMR High School teacher Mrs. Drahos at 268-6135. Visit the local HOSA website for more information.

The students are also sponsoring a fun run/walk to raise money for prostate cancer research on June 7th.
