Community Members Show Importance of American Band Music

By Rachel Ousley

Community members come together to make music for the semiannual University of Great Falls Community Band concert.

Members range from students to adults from not just Great Falls, but places like Helena and Choteau as well. Under the direction of Bud Nicholls, this is the first concert the band is playing a unifying theme. They are celebrating the American spirit in this "Portrait of American Music" concert. The selections highlight many of the great American composers, illustrating America’s deep history in music. Nicholls explains, “the band music really got its foundation worldwide in the United States from the Civil War on with things like brass bands”.

The Community Band has been around for about thirty years, performing about three times a year. They get together Thursday nights to rehearse, if you're interested in joining. Music to them is what makes a nation great. They play simply for the fun of playing and to spread music.
