Designer Presents Lewis and Clark Video Game

By Charlie Keegan

The story of Lewis and Clark has been told hundreds of times and now it's becoming a video game.

A game designer from Connecticut was in Great Falls this week presenting his version of the game, which he calls "Meriwether.”

In the 3D role-playing game, a player goes through the entire journey as Meriwether Lewis. The game leads you to Native American tribes and through new flora and fauna all while developing leadership skills.

Josh DeBonis, the game's designer, says this is a great way to educate people about the Lewis and Clark expedition. β€œIt's a completely different way of looking at the story than a book or a film. The other thing is that games, particularly 3D games like this, are great at is depicting spaces. Since the Lewis and Clark story is as much about the locations that they went to as the people and the things that happened to them, that's one way a game can portray the story in a unique way,” he says.

DeBonis says he expects to finish the video game, which is designed for computers, in about a year.
