ExxonMobil May Owe Montana More Money

By KFBB News Team

Even after a recent settlement between the state and ExxonMobil, Montana officials say the oil company may still owe more.

Teamed with consultants, the state's Natural Resource Damage Program is continuing to investigate the spill's impact on wildlife and habitat.

The attorney general's office claims under state and federal law, ExxonMobil may have to pay more in damages to help restore natural resources in the area. The investigation is scheduled to end early this summer.

The Silver-Tip Pipeline burst in the Yellowstone River this past July spilling 63,000 gallons of oil near Laurel.

Earlier in January, the oil giant paid the state of Montana $1.6 million for damage done by the spill. ExxonMobil crews have removed the broken pipeline and installed a new one.
