Homeless Vets Receive Over $100,000

By KFBB News Team

To tackle the looming issue of veteran's homelessness, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the VA have made over $100,000 dollars available so vet's in north-western Montana will have a permanent place to call home.

This funding to local housing agencies is part of the Obama Administration's commitment to end veteran and long-term chronic homelessness by 2015. The goal of the funding is to help homeless vet's obtain permanent housing through the use of HUD -VASH vouchers for rental assistance. Veterans participating in the program will rent privately owned housing and generally contribute no more than 30% of their income toward rent.

Senator Jon Tester announced the funding Thursday a week after he and VA Secretary Eric Shinseki toured facilities in Montana.

“It helps them find permanent housing through the awarding of the voucher so this particular component of the VA's efforts to end homelessness is very critical, not just in Montana but across the country again because of its permanent nature it allows them to get into a place that they can call their own says Mark Annas HUD-VASH Coordinator.

The funds will supply permanent housing and case management for 25 homeless veterans, officials estimate there could be as many as 250 homeless veterans in Montana.

$100k won't even build one house. How about we give Congress coupons for their pay instead?
