K9 "Shep" Captures First Criminal

In November we introduced you to the Great Falls Police Department's newest K-9 unit, "Shep."

Shep had his first test this week of capturing a suspect and he passed with flying colors!

Yesterday, police found out that a man with several outstanding warrants was hiding out inside a residence at 1301 Seventh Avenue South. The warrants for Eric Matthew Cagle amounted to $140,000.

Cagle was wanted for several felonies including assault with a weapon and assaulting a partner or family member.

When Shep and the officers arrived at the home, which was locked, the owner of the residence gave permission to enter. Policemen broke down the door, and Shep found Cagle hiding in the attic.

Cagle refused to come out, even after being warned several times, so Shep bit Cagle in the arm.

Cagle immediately surrendered and was taken to jail. He was checked out by a doctor and did not suffer serious injuries from the bite.

Shep is assigned to Officer Clint Houston.
